Born to a Syrian Christian family in Calicut, Verghese Kurien had his first tryst with milk production in Anand, upon his return from the US after completing a Masters in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1949. Touched by the discouraging state of monopolised milk production at the time, he decided to dedicate his life not only to the empowerment of the farmers producing it, but also to making India world's largest producer of dairy. In 1970, he launched Operation Flood, which culminated in making our country self-sufficient with regards to dairy production, thus bringing in White Revolution.  

Kurien's perseverance and innovative ways of improving the dairy industry earned him recognition as the Milkman of India. Here are some facts about him, which will make you appreciate the next tub of ice-cream you hog on at a whole new level! 

1. He experimented with ways to produce milk powder from buffalo milk. This culminated in the establishment of India's first ever milk powder plant. 

The plant, upon Kurien's request, was inaugurated by Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on October 31st, 1955. 

2.  The White Revolution started by him led to the development of Mother Dairy. 

3. Other important institutions established under his leadership include GCMMF (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd) and NDDB (National Dairy Development Board). 

4. Shyam Benegal's film 'Manthan,' a story set in India's milk cooperative movement, was funded by the farmers working for Dr Kurien.

When Benegal was unable to fund the film, Kurien asked his farmers to contribute 2 rupees each to the film. Later, they all went to watch the film together, relating to not only the story but with a strong sense of pride for contributing to its fruition.

5. His passionate speech at a conference in Rome led to many European countries donating milk to kick-off Operation Flood. 

He sold this milk in the metropolis to raise money for the establishment of milk corporations across the country. 

6. Operation Flood culminated with around 72,000 villages in India producing milk! 

This brought India to the forefront in dairy production all over the world. 

7. He received many awards, including the Padamshri (1965) and the Padmabhushan (1966). 

8. In recognition of his commendable work, Michigan State University awarded him with an honorary degree in 1965. 

9. He authored 'I Too Had A Dream,' an inspiring narrative about the empowerment of farmers and development of milk corporations India. 

10. Because of his invaluable contribution to the dairy industry, his birthday, the 26th of November, is now celebrated as National Milk Day.

इस परंपरा के वाहक अशिक्षित व निम्न व मध्यम वर्ग ही नहीं है बल्कि उच्च व शिक्षित समाज भी है। भारत के सबसे समृध्द राज्यों पंजाब, हरियाणा, दिल्ली और गुजरात में लिंगानुपात सबसे कम है। २००१ की जनगणना के अनुसार एक हजार बालकों पर बालिकाओं की संख्या पंजाब में 798, हरियाणा में 819 और गुजरात में 883 है। कुछ अन्य राज्यों ने इस प्रवृत्ति को गंभीरता से लिया और इसे रोकने के लिए अनेक कदम उठाए जैसे गुजरात में 'डीकरी बचाओ अभियान' चलाया जा रहा है। इसी प्रकार से अन्य राज्यों में भी योजनाएँ चलाई जा रही हैं। भारत में पिछले चार दशकों से सात साल से कम आयु के बच्चों के लिंग अनुपात में लगातार गिरावट आ रही है। वर्ष 1981 में एक हजार बालकों पर ९६२ बालिकाएँ थी। वर्ष २००१ में यह अनुपात घटकर ९२७ हो गया। यह इस बात का संकेत है कि हमारी आर्थिक समृध्दि और शिक्षा के बढते स्तर का इस समस्या पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड रहा है। वर्तमान समय में इस समस्या को दूर करने के लिए सामाजिक जागरूकता बढाने के लिए साथ-साथ प्रसव से पूर्व तकनीकी जांच अधिनियम को सख्ती से लागू किए जाने की जरूरत है। जीवन बचाने वाली आधुनिक प्रौद्योगिकी का दुरुपयोग रोकने का हरसंभव प्रयास किया जाना चाहिए। देश की पहली महिला राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा पाटील ने पिछले वर्ष महात्मा गांधी की 138वीं जयंती के मौके पर केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य और परिवार कल्याण मंत्रालय की बालिका बचाओ योजना (सेव द गर्ल चाइल्ड) को लांच किया था। राष्ट्रपति ने इस बात पर अफसोस जताया था कि लडक़ियाें को लडक़ाें के समान महत्व नहीं मिलता। लडक़ा-लडक़ी में भेदभाव हमारे जीवनमूल्याें में आई खामियाें को दर्शाता है। उन्नत कहलाने वाले राज्याें में ही नहीं बल्कि प्रगतिशील समाजाें में भी लिंगानुपात की स्थिति चिंताजनक है। हिमाचल प्रदेश जैसे छोटे राज्य में सैक्स रैशो में सुधार और कन्या भ्रूण स्हर्त्यातुजेत्द्स्ज्य्कि रोकने के लिए प्रदेश सरकार ने एक अनूठी स्कीम तैयार की है। इसके तहत कोख में पल रहे बच्चे का लिंग जांच करवा उसकी हत्या करने वाले लोगाें के बारे में जानकारी देने वाले को 10 हजार रुपए की नकद इनाम देने की घोषणा की गई है। प्रत्येक प्रदेश के स्वास्थ्य विभाग को ऐसा सकारात्मक कदम उठाने की जरूरत है। प्रसूति पूर्व जांच तकनीक अधिनियम 1994 को सख्ती से लागू किए जाने की जरूरत है। भ्रूण हत्या को रोकने के लिए राज्य सरकारों को निजी क्लीनिक्स का औचक निरीक्षण व उन पर अगर नजर रखने की जरूरत है। भ्रूण हत्या या परीक्षण करने वालों के क्लीनिक सील किए जाने या जुर्माना किए जाने का प्रावधान की जरूरत है। फिलहाल इंदिरा गांधी बालिका सुरक्षा योजना व्केस्र्त्जुच्फ्य्जुय्तिक्र्त्यु तहत पहली कन्या के जन्म के बाद स्थाई परिवार नियोजन अपनाने वाले माता-पिता को 25 हजार रुपए तथा दूसरी कन्या के बाद स्थाई परिवार नियोजन अपनाने माता-पिता को 20 हजार रुपए प्रोत्साहन राशि के रूप में प्रदान किए जा रहे हैं। बालिकों पर हो रहे अत्याचार के विरुध्द देश के प्रत्येक नागरिक को आगे आने की जरूरत है। बालिकाओं के सशक्तिकरण में हर प्रकार का सहयोग देने की जरूरत है। इस काम की शुरूआत घर से होनी चाहिए। ने ऊपर होने वाले अत्याचार को भी वे परिवार के लिए हंस कर सहन करती हैं। यह वास्तव में विडंबना है कि हमारे देश के सत्तात्मक मानसिकता और बालकाें को वरीयता दिया जाना ऐसी मूल्यहीनता है, जिसे कुछ चिकित्सक लिंग निर्धारण परीक्षण जैसी सेवा देकर बढावा दे रहे हैं। यह एक चिंताजनक विषय है िक देश के कुछ समृध्द राज्याें में Here is what is happening:

The battery and magnets are resting on the coil, allowing current to flow in a small coil section, which creates a magnetic field. His magnets are oriented in such a way that the front of the train adds to the field and the back of the train opposes the field.

For example, at 0:20, you can see that the battery’s positive terminal is pointing to the right, and the coil is a right-hand helix, the current will create a field pointing left. If we want the train to go left, then we want the “front” of the train to be in the same direction as the coil field and the “back” of the train to oppose the coil field. In other words, he placed the magnets with Norths facing outwards. For this configuration, the train will always travel in the direction of the negative terminal of the battery. If we wanted the train to travel in the direction of the positive terminal, we’d need to put the Souths pointing outwards.

If the coil was a left-handed helix, it would be the opposite (would travel in the direction of the positive battery terminals when Norths are facing outwards).
